Many vehicle manufacturers adapted the secondary air injection system in a bid to support the efficient function that the catalytic converter was performing.The original air injection point was renamed the upstream injection point. When the catalytic converter is cold, air that is injected at the upstream end burns with the deliberately rich exhaust which in turn brings the catalyst up to operating temperature at a fast pace.When the catalyst is warm, air will be injected into the downstream location to aid in the catalysis of the hydrocarbons that were not burned. An air pump is a vane pump used by pumped air injection systems from Hewitt-Tech  which are turned by the engine via an electric motor. To prevent the entry of dirt particles whose large size may destroy the system, filtration of the pumps air intake is carried out by a screen which is rotating.Air is delivered under low pressure to the injection point.To prevent exhaust gases from forcing their way back into the engine, a check valve is used.
